Retired 95-year-old U.S. Army Col. Herman Andrew Conrad, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, left this life early Sunday morning, October 3, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Monday, September 20, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Herman O. and Lydia Bollinger Conrad.

He has been married twice. First to the former Verda Jean Maddox, who preceded him in death. Second, on February 13, 1971, in Maryland, he was married to former Betty Jean Simon, who predeceased him in death on February 22, 2021.

Will survive his children, William Conrad and his wife, Lauris, of Turlock, Calif., Suzanne Grazier of Tampa, Florida, Lori Robinson Haines of Plantation, Florida, Allen W. Conrad of Elkins, Jerry Daniel Simon and his wife, Carrie, of Akron, Ohio, Michael K. Simon and wife, Allicen, of Elkins; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are two brothers, Allen B. and Warren C. Conrad; and two sisters, Lydia A. Tilley and Grace Hendricks.

He was drafted into the United States Army on September 30, 1944, ten days after his 18th birthday in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was discharged in October 1946. He was then recalled in May 1948 and served in World War II . II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring July 31, 1973, as Commander of US Army troops assigned to the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland. He had been director of military intelligence collection for MACV, Saigon, Vietnam 1969, and had helped select military targets from North Vietnam to the Cambodian border. He was awarded three Legions of Merit, a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Honor Medals and a Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Colonel Conrad graduated from Davis & Elkins College with a commerce degree in 1974, was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Community of Christ), and was an associate member of the First United Methodist Church of ‘Elkins. where he served as a Sunday school teacher for thirty years.

He was co-owner of Cromwell Real Estate from 1974 to 1978 and co-owner of Conrad’s Antiques and Collectibles from 1981 to present.

He was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee from 1982 to 1990, of the Silver Haired Legislature, President of the Senate from 1988 to 1991, of the American Legion HW Daniel’s Post 29, where he served as Commander from 1976 to 1977, and from Elkins Lodge. 1135, BPOE for over fifty years.

He was also the den leader of Cub Scout Pack 88 for two years, served on the board of directors of West Virginia Region 7 Senior Citizens and was a member of the Randolph County Senior Center where he volunteered for 38 years, 20 years as treasurer, four years as president, 26 years as bingo coordinator and supervised development of nutrition sites in Harman and Mill Creek, West Virginia. He personally donated over 60 wheelchairs, over two hundred walkers and other medical equipment to the Randolph County Senior Center for distribution to those in need.

Colonel Conrad’s cremation request has been honored.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. A. The Graveside Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the Phillips Cemetery in Jimtown, West Virginia. Reverend Doctor Basil A. Hensley and Reverend Brian Seders will officiate and interment will follow with full military honors.
