Emperor Thanh Thai’s sword auctioned in US for $ 50,000

A sword believed to belong to Emperor Thanh Thai sold for $ 50,000 at auction hosted by GWS Auctions House in the United States

Measuring 81cm long, “the sword represents a prosperous nation, peace and happiness and is decorated with inlaid gemstones, incised details and a lotus-shaped hilt,” the auction house said. .

It features calligraphy in Chinese saying “10th Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty”, “Maintenance of Justice and Order” and “Heaven’s Mandate: Emperor Thanh Thai”.

The sword was a family heirloom passed down many generations over 1,000 years and has survived “many wars, many dynasties,” GWS said.

Although its value was estimated to be between 350,000 and 400,000, it yielded only a fraction.

Thanh Thai (1879 – 1954), born Nguyen Phuc Buu Lan, was the seventh son of the Emperor Duke Duke.

He ascended to the throne at the age of 10 as the 10th monarch of the Nguyen dynasty.

After an 18-year reign, he was forced to abdicate by French colonialists due to his patriotic leanings and involvement in anti-colonial movements.

He and his son, Emperor Duy Tan, were forced into exile on Reunion Island, an island in the Indian Ocean, in 1916.

Thanh Thai returned to Vietnam after 1945 and died in Saigon in 1954.
