Funeral services for the retired sergeant. 1st Class Robert Brinson, 87, of Killeen, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chisolm Family Funeral Home in Killeen. Interment with full military honors will follow service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Mr. Brinson died on September 10, 2021 in Killeen.

He was born on May 17, 1934 to Mary Ola Brinson in Ellabell, Georgia.

He graduated in 1953 from Pembroke High School in Pembroke, Georgia.

He enlisted in the United States Army on September 14, 1955. His long military career and duty stations included many locations in the United States, as well as overseas stays in Greenland (Thule) , Japan, Korea, Germany (Ludwigsburg: Neu Ulm) and Viet – Nam (Saigon; Long Binh; Phulam; Da-Nang: Quang Ngai; Cam Ranh Bay).

His awarded or authorized campaign decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations and ribbons included: Good Conduct Medal Clasp, Silver, 2 Buckles; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and the Army Medal of Honor.

He retired honorably on January 31, 1979, at Fort Hood.

After retiring from the military, he remained active working as a technician at the Learning Resource Center in Fort Hood, then as a warehouse supervisor at JC Penney in Killeen for 20 years.

Robert was “all about the family” in the way he lived his life. He was a dedicated and hard worker and was always ready to help his friends, neighbors and the community.

At a young age, he joined the Macedonian Baptist Church in Ellabell, Georgia, where he was baptized and served on the board.

He loved dogs and would have had a pot-bellied pig if that had been allowed in the neighborhood. He loved birding and learning about different species of birds (among other animals), and even built nesting boxes for them.

He also loved trains and enjoyed doing his daily crossword puzzles, listening to jazz music, watching westerns, watching game shows and even trying to guess the answers before contestants answered questions from shows such as “Family Feud. “,” America Says “and” Common Knowledge “.

He enjoyed watching sports on TV and attending local high school football games. He loved grilling and was known as the “master of grilling”.

His hobbies included woodworking where he created shelves, cabinets, a dollhouse, dog kennels, a domestic bar, a podium for his daughter when she was teaching, etc.

His other hobby was gardening, for which he had a green thumb. He maintained a neat, well-kept green plush lawn, as well as a butterfly garden and gardens with other plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits.

Along with his hobbies, he was always proud of her dress, including his always wrinkled and ironed jeans.

Robert was no stranger to anyone, pleasant and knowledgeable to chat with, and knew how to make you smile and laugh with his witty sense of humor.

He is predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Brinson, his son Roni Keith Brinson, his mother Mary Ola Brinson, two sisters: Laura Walker, Viola Hamilton and five brothers: Samuel Walker, Henry Walker, Johnnie Walker, Andrew Walker and Matthew Walker .

Survivors include his daughter Lisa Yvonne Brinson of Killeen; sisters: Dorothy Smith of Ellabell, Georgia and Mary W. Lowe of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
