Hanoi (VNA) – To carry out the strategy of sustainable development of Vietnam’s maritime economy, special attention is needed on science and technology, overhauling relevant laws and policies and strengthening international cooperation, according to experts .

Professor and Doctor Dang Nguyen Anh, Vice-president of the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences, said the strategy until 2030, with a vision to 2045, opens prospects for a new stage of development of the maritime economy.

To successfully implement this strategy, science and technology have an important role to play and must move forward in identifying problems and finding solutions, he noted.

Associate Professor and Doctor Vu Thanh Ca of Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment believed that to carry out the strategy and achieve the “twin goals” of curbing COVID-19 and boosting social development -economically, Vietnam should continue to revise the relevant legal rules, mechanisms and policies so as to ensure their feasibility, consistency and compliance with international law and treaties to which the country is a party.

In particular, it is necessary to set up a complete and uniform database on marine and island resources and the environment at the service of socio-economic development, national sovereignty safeguard and defense – ensuring security, he added.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Sy, deputy director of the management board of the sustainable rural development program for the poor of the People’s Committee of Quang Binh Province, recommended that Vietnam continue to expand and promote international maritime cooperation.

It should strengthen ties with strategic and global partners, countries with traditional relations, those with assets linked to the sea and those sharing common interests on the basis of respect for the independence and sovereignty of each, equality, mutual benefit and compliance with international law.

Vietnam should also maintain its active participation in international and regional forums, especially maritime cooperation activities within the framework of ASEAN, said Sy./.
