USAID Provides Virtual Support For People With Disabilities During COVID Shutdowns – Viet Nam

Improving the mobility of people with disabilities is a priority of USAID’s Moving without Limits project. Thanks to their support, 100 beneficiaries recently received assistive devices, such as prostheses, crutches and wheelchairs. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, rehabilitation staff were unable to meet with patients in person to provide follow-up assessments to ensure the devices were working, and instead contacted them through online platforms. line, such as Zalo, a popular messaging app in Vietnam, as well as Zoom. The results revealed that 94% of the devices were found to be effective in increasing mobility and delivering the expected benefits, while the remaining devices simply need adaptations to accommodate the living environments of the recipients, like another type of Wheelchair.

Assistive devices provide essential support for people with disabilities. Despite restrictions during the pandemic, USAID provided ongoing care through virtual outreach, facilitating the appropriate use of assistive devices and enabling self-care, independence, and social participation for people with disabilities.
