Vietnam’s COVID-19 death toll hits 737, new single-day high

Vietnam reported 737 deaths from the coronavirus on Sunday, a new high in a single day as the country also saw an extremely high number of new cases counted in a single day, despite strict virus prevention protocols applied to it. nationwide, health officials said.

The new deaths brought the overall death toll in the country to 8,277.

Vietnam reported 11,214 new cases on Sunday, down from 11,321 new cases on Saturday, setting a record. That’s about eight times the number of cases recorded throughout 2020, according to the health ministry.

Vietnam had recorded 348,059 coronavirus cases as of Sunday, ranking it 68th out of 222 countries and territories.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city and the center of Vietnam’s fourth wave of coronavirus, has so far recorded 175,994 local cases and 6,538 deaths.

The city extended a stay-at-home order until September 15, taking effect Monday. The city’s COVID-19 death toll is also skyrocketing.

Authorities in the capital, Hanoi, also extended social distancing measures for another two weeks on Friday, as local transmissions of the coronavirus continued to rise.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Sunday ordered COVID-19 tests for the entire population of Ho Chi Minh City and sent the military to distribute food as the daily national tally of new cases exceeded 10,000 in the past few days.

Vietnam has administered a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine to more than 17 million people, out of a total population of 98 million.

Almost 1.8 million people have been fully vaccinated, which is only 1.8% of the population.
