Marc Marino, 26, has lived in Irvine for most of his life, moving with his parents, of Filipino descent, from Hong Kong as a child. He said his first introduction to politics came through his family’s church, where he remembered leaders defending Proposition 8, the measure to ban same-sex marriage.

Mr Marino said he had finally stopped going to church and now identified himself as “more of a Berniecrate”. Many of her friends at home have also politically separated from their more conservative immigrant parents.

“Most of my friends have moved more to the left,” he said, “which I didn’t expect.”

On Tuesday, he voted against the dismissal. As a healthcare worker, he supported Mr Newsom’s response to the pandemic.

Focusing on the pandemic, Newsom’s campaign relentlessly defeated Republican frontrunner Larry Elder as a Trump candidate who wouldn’t prioritize containing the virus.

The statewide result was that 64 percent of vaccinated independent voters opposed the recall, according to David Binder, Mr Newsom’s investigator. The small group of unvaccinated independents overwhelmingly voted in favor of the recall.
