A batch of 1,499,940 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine has been delivered to Vietnam from the United States via the Covax Global Vaccine Access Mechanism.

The new batch followed three previous donations of vaccines from the United States to Vietnam via Covax, totaling 7.5 million doses to date, according to a press release issued by the US Embassy in Hanoi on Saturday.

The doses came directly from the Pfizer manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In addition to donating vaccines, the United States has committed more than $ 26.7 million in Covid-19 related aid to Vietnam since the start of the pandemic, the embassy said.

The United States is the largest country contributor to Covax, contributing $ 4 billion to support the purchase and delivery of Covid-19 vaccine mechanisms to 92 low- and middle-income economies.

Vietnam has vaccinated around 33.1 million people with at least one vaccine against Covid-19. About 9.8 million people have been fully immunized.

The country aims to get 150 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to cover at least 70% of its population by next year.
